The Teton Range has no foothills. The fault block that lifted it rises straight from the floor of Jackson Hole, a nine-million-year escarpment with 2,100 metres of relief and nothing in between — which is why the summits appear from the valley as a single unbroken wall of Precambrian gneiss.
That geology explains the balloon. Air over a flat-bottomed glacial valley behaves predictably at first light; the katabatic drainage off Rendezvous Mountain settles overnight, and the surface layer sits still until thermal heating breaks it. The Grand Teton itself, at 4,199 metres, was first climbed in 1898 by William Owen's party, though the Nez Perce, Shoshone and Bannock had crossed these passes for millennia before any survey named them.
The park was established in 1929 and covered only the peaks. The valley below remained private ranchland until John D. Rockefeller Jr., buying quietly through the Snake River Land Company, assembled some 14,000 hectares and offered them to the nation. Wyoming resisted for two decades. The enlarged park was confirmed in 1950, and the Rockefeller parkway now links it to Yellowstone.
What survives is a functioning ecosystem rather than a scenic reserve. Pronghorn still run the Path of the Pronghorn, a migration corridor at least 6,000 years old. Elk winter on the National Elk Refuge to the south. Bison, moose and grizzlies move through the same sagebrush an aerial tram passenger sees from Rendezvous Mountain, and the same braided channels a Snake River float crosses at water level.
Altitude changes only the framing. From a wicker basket the moraines read as arcs, the river as a silver braid, the shadow line of the range advancing east across the flats at walking pace.
